Creating has always been an important part of my life. I was born in a family full of artists who show their creativity in a number of ways. While I reflected over the work that I’ve been able to create in my time at Ouachita I kept coming back to this idea that to be able to make and create things is a privilege. My idea coming into this exhibit was to communicate how special that is to me and how this idea has guided me as I've created a number of these pieces. There's a quote by one of my favorite artists Tess Guinery that says “ You were made by a creator, create”. It's something that we can choose to steward in a number of ways and I wanted to consciously move forward thinking about that as I design and make things in the future.
An essential part of what makes art and design successful is choosing a balance between simply communicating and communicating something in a beautiful way. My experience in studio art has helped me to realize how stories can be told through drawing and painting, and has shaped and developed me into the graphic designer that I am today. Bringing together shape and line to form pieces that tell a story in a direct and simplified way has been a point of growth for me as a designer.
One of my favorite aspects of design to work with is color. Color can be subtle and quiet or it can be bold and vibrant, but either way it has the ability to make or break a piece. In my ethical fashion campaign I loved working with different colors to create something meaningful that was also visually pleasing. As I continue to create art, I hope to choose subject matter that I am passionate about and that has personal meaning or significance. Crafting my own style as a graphic designer has been so much fun because as I’ve grown as a designer I have realized the joy of learning to steward my own voice and how that can contribute to the world in a fun and meaningful way.
