Artist Statement
John Baldessari, when asked to give advice to young artists, said, “You have to be possessed, which you can’t will.” The art that I have been possessed to make explores the intersection of organized religion with anti-racism, feminism, and LGBTQ+ activism through representative abstraction and mixed materials. In my work, I want to call on Christians to reconcile the goodness of God with the marginalized people groups who have historically been pushed out of Christian spaces.
The guiding principle for my work is that it should never be boring. It can be visceral, weird, and even terrible, but never boring. I will not make any more boring art.
