Design Philosophy
Each time I start a new project, I see it as the chance to create something that excites me and, if I’m lucky, other people, too. I love the accomplishment of the end result, but I also delight greatly in the process. Whenever possible, I like to get away from the computer and work with analog tools. Paper, pencils, paint, and the like have an important place in my work. Even if they don’t make it into the final piece. This approach is informed by my love of texture. I find myself being drawn to design that appears more tactile or handmade. It adds character that makes work stand out from what sometimes seems to be endless work made of flat colors and perfectly kerned type. My goal with design is to make people look twice, even if the content is something they don’t initially care about. I want to charm people and come up with unexpected solutions and never settle for good enough, but I also want to make humble work. This means creating work in which beauty is not the primary purpose. The work I most enjoy creating fosters good—sustainability, social justice, a love of nature, human kindness, and the joy of being alive!
